Bad Beats #34
Close only counts in horseshoes. If you’re betting on sports, being close is just a bad beat. Maybe you missed the over by a point. Maybe your team doesn’t cover the spread. Maybe the underdog actually won the game. Each week produces new sports betting upsets.
Here’s a look at this week’s bad beats:
1. NHL – Winnipeg Jets at Montreal Canadiens Moneyline (6/7/21)
The Stanley Cup Playoff season is always an exciting time. It’s even more exciting when your team wins in overtime and advances to the next round. That’s exactly what happened to the Montreal Canadiens, who won the series 4-0 against the Winnipeg Jets.
The Jets had a chance to win not only Game 3, but also Game 4 on Monday night. In the 2nd period, Winnipeg’s Logan Stanley scored a goal, tying the game 2-2. The 3rd period was scoreless, forcing overtime. Just 1:39 into overtime, Montreal’s Tyler Toffoli scored, and the Canadiens defeated the Jets 3-2. Bad beat for those who bet the Jets moneyline. Also, a bad beat for those who may have placed a futures bet on the Jets to win the Stanley Cup.
2. MLB – Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees Moneyline (6/6/21)
It was a weekend sweep for the Boston Red Sox in the Bronx. Prior to Sunday night’s game, the Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees in two straight games on Friday and Saturday. However, the Yankees were off to a good start on Sunday night. In the bottom of the 1st inning, Garry Sanchez doubled and both Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres scored, giving the Yanks a 2-1 lead.
It wasn’t until the bottom of the 4th inning that the Yankees scored again. Miguel Andujar scored after Judge grounded it to second. The Yanks then took a 3-1 lead. Unfortunately, however, the Red Sox were successful in the top of the 7th inning. Marwin Gonzalez homered and Hunter Renfroe scored, tying the game at 3-3. In the top of the 8th inning, Christian Arroyo scored, and the Sox took a 4-3 lead. Luckily Torres scored in the bottom of the 9th and the game was tied at 4.
Extra innings! Yay! A chance for the Yanks to win? Nope. Top of the 10th…the Sox went up 6-4. Bottom of the 10th…Rougned Odor scored. 6-5 Yankees. And that was the final score. The Sox defeated the Yanks 6-5. Bad beat for Yankees moneyline bettors and fans. However, this was the closest game for the Yankees all weekend.
