Bad Beats #23
Close only counts in horseshoes. If you’re betting on sports, being close is just a bad beat. Maybe you missed the over by a point. Maybe your team doesn’t cover the spread. Maybe the underdog actually won the game. Each week produces new sports betting upsets.
Here’s a look at this week’s bad beats:
1. College Basketball – First Round: Drake Bulldogs at Wichita State Shockers Spread (3/18/21)
This First Round game between the Drake Bulldogs and the Wichita State Shockers was an exciting and interesting one for sure. Drake opened up as 1-point underdogs and closed as 2.5-point favorites on Friday.
With 13 seconds left in the game, Drake was up 53-49, in which case they would have covered the 2.5-point spread. However, just three seconds later, Wichita State’s Dexter Dennis made a three pointer, and the Shockers trailed by just one point. Drake’s Joseph Yesufu missed a free throw with six seconds left, but even if he would have made it, the Bulldogs still would have just fallen short of covering the 2.5-point spread. If only Dennis had missed that three pointer.
2. College Basketball – Second Round: Oklahoma Sooners at Gonzaga Basketball Spread (3/22/21)
The Oklahoma Sooners were 15.5-point underdogs heading into the Second Round game against the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Monday. With 42 seconds left in the game, Gonzaga was up 87-70 after Corey Kispert made two free throws for the Bulldogs. However, the Sooners did have a chance to cover with 36 seconds left. Gonzaga’s Anton Watson got fouled, sending Oklahoma’s Alondes Williams to the foul line for two free throws.
Alondes missed the first free throw but made the second. He needed to make both free throws in order for Oklahoma to cover the 15.5-point spread. It’s always a little bit of a bummer to lose a bet by a free throw. Bad beat.
3. College Basketball – First Round: Missouri Tigers at Oklahoma Sooners O/U (3/20/21)
The over/under was set at 139.5 on Saturday for the First Round matchup between the Missouri Tigers and the Oklahoma Sooners. With one second left on the clock, the total was at 138. The under seemed safe, right? Wrong. It wasn’t. Why? Well Missouri’s Kobe Brown got fouled, sending Oklahoma’s Jalen Hill to the line for two free throws. Hill made the first one, which brought the total to 139. Then, he made the second one, and the over hit. The Sooners defeated the Tigers 72-68, bringing the points total to 140. A half a point over 139.5. Yikes. That’s rough.
