Bad Beats #15
Close only counts in horseshoes. If you’re betting on sports, being close is just a bad beat. Maybe you missed the over by a point. Maybe your team doesn’t cover the spread. Maybe the underdog actually won the game. Each week produces new sports betting upsets.
Here’s a look at this week’s bad beats:
1. NBA – Charlotte Hornets at Orlando Magic Spread (1/25/21)
The Orlando Magic were 2-point underdogs heading into Monday night’s matchup. This was great for the Magic, but what was even better was the fact that they were up by 12 heading into the fourth quarter. The prospect of the Magic covering at +2 seemed very likely, but the start of the fourth quarter put a bit of a damper on it.
With eight seconds left, the game was tied at 104. Great. There was still a chance of the Magic covering, and maybe even winning. But with 0.7 seconds left in the game, the Magic took a five-second violation on the inbound. The Magic then fouled, sending Charlotte’s Gordon Hayward to the foul line. His free throw put the Hornets up by three, and they won the game 107-104. Could have been a push if Hayward didn’t make the free throw. Too bad for those Magic spread bettors.
2. NBA – New York Knicks at Portland Trail Blazers Spread (1/24/21)
Oof. This was a close one. The Trail Blazers were a 4-point favorite against the New York Knicks on Sunday. After Portland’s Damian Lillard made his second free throw with five seconds left in the game, they were up five. Ah yes. It looked like Portland was going to cover. But never rule out a buzzer beater to crush the hopes and dreams of bettors.
With 0.9 seconds left, New York’s Immanuel Quickley made a meaningless basket. I say “meaningless” because the Knicks were not going to win, and all that basket did was ruin the chances of the Trail Blazers covering. Portland still won 116-113, but no covering for them in this one.
3. College Basketball – Charleston Southern Buccaneers at Gardner-Webb Bulldogs Spread (1/25/21)
The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs were 12.5-point favorites against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers on Monday. The Bulldogs were leading by 15 with 20 seconds left in the game. Even if Charleston Southern were to have scored two-point basket, Gardner-Webb still would have covered.
However, with two seconds left, Charleston Southern’s Phlandrous Fleming Jr. made a three-pointer, and Gardner Webb did not cover. Gardner-Webb still defeated Charleston Southern 74-62, which is only by 12 points and not 12.5. Yikes. This one hurts.
