Bad Beats #20
Close only counts in horseshoes. If you’re betting on sports, being close is just a bad beat. Maybe you missed the over by a point. Maybe your team doesn’t cover the spread. Maybe the underdog actually won the game. Each week produces new sports betting upsets.
Here’s a look at this week’s bad beats:
1. College Basketball – Iowa Hawkeyes at Ohio State Buckeyes Odds Boost (2/28/21)
The Ohio State Buckeyes were 2.5-point favorites heading into Sunday’s game against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Tipico Sportsbook offered an odds boost for Iowa’s Luka Garza to score at least 25 points AND the Iowa Hawkeyes to win. Now, Iowa won with ease, defeating the Buckeyes 73-57. However, Luka Garza fell a tiny bit short. And when I say a tiny bit, I mean a TINY BIT.
Garza scored 24 points. Just ONE point short of 25. However, despite this outcome, Garza also finished with 11 rebounds. He averages 24.3 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per game
2. NBA – Charlotte Hornets at Sacramento Kings Moneyline (2/28/21)
This was a rough one for the Sacramento Kings on Sunday. The Kings were up 121-112 with 2:07 to go. With 33.9 seconds left, the Kings led 123-118, but Sacramento’s Harrison Barnes was fouled, sending Charlotte’s Terry Rozier to the line for three free throws. Rozier made all free throws, putting the Hornets down by just two points.
However, 10 seconds later, the Kings’ De’Aaron Fox made a jumper, putting them up by four. Charlotte’s P.J. Washington made a three pointer with 17 seconds left, and then the Hornets were down by just one. So, 10 seconds to go and the Hornets’ Miles Bridges gets fouled. Sacramento’s Buddy Hield gets sent to the line and misses the first free throw but makes the second. The Kings were up 126-124. With 1.4 seconds to go, Malik Monk tied it at 126 for the Hornets. But that’s not all. The Kings’ Richaun Holmes then got fouled, sending Monk to the line for one. He made the free throw and the Hornets went up 127-126.
The Kings had one more chance at the buzzer with a three pointer from Hield, but he missed it, and the Hornets defeated the Kings 127-126. Bad beat for those who bet on the Kings moneyline at -160.
3. College Basketball – Cleveland Cavaliers at Philadelphia 76ers O/U (2/27/21)
The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 112-109 on Saturday. The over/under was set at 220.5. The game was tied at 92 at the end of regulation, forcing an overtime. With 5.4 seconds left in overtime, the Cavaliers were up 112-106 after Darius Garland made two free throws. At this point, the total was at 218, which was still under the 220.5. Safely? No. Why? Well, with 2.8 seconds left, Ben Simmons made a three pointer for the 76ers. But the Cavs still won, right?
Yes, the Cavs still won, but that isn’t the point. The point is that this Ben Simmons three pushed the total over 220.5 by HALF A POINT. The game finished with a total of 221 points. Bad beat and rough last couple of seconds for those who bet the under on this game. And to all you over bettors out there, you owe Ben Simmons a big thank you.
