Bad Beats #27
Close only counts in horseshoes. If you’re betting on sports, being close is just a bad beat. Maybe you missed the over by a point. Maybe your team doesn’t cover the spread. Maybe the underdog actually won the game. Each week produces new sports betting upsets.
Here’s a look at this week’s bad beats:
1. NBA – Phoenix Suns at Milwaukee Bucks Moneyline (4/19/21)
In case you didn’t know, the Phoenix Suns are an impressive 41-16 on the season. They are in second place in the Western Conference standings right behind the Utah Jazz, who are 43-15 on the season. So yeah, they are doing pretty well. The Suns are currently at +1500 to win the NBA Finals.
Monday night’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks was exactly what you needed to get you ready for the rest of the week. With 25.5 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Phoenix’s Devin Booker made a jumper, tying it up at 116 and forcing the game into overtime. In OT, Milwaukee’s Khris Middleton nailed a three pointer with 22.1 seconds left, tying the game at 127. At this point, 2OT looked like a possibility. However, with 0.3 seconds left, Milwaukee’s P.J. Tucker was fouled, sending Booker to the foul line for two. Booker made the first free throw…and that’s all he needed to do. The Phoenix Suns defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 128-127. Bad beat for Bucks moneyline bettors.
2. NBA – Dallas Mavericks at Memphis Grizzlies Moneyline (4/14/21)
When in doubt, get the ball to Luka Doncic. Not only is Doncic just plain good at basketball, but he also plays really well under pressure. With 3.2 seconds Doncic was sent to the foul line, making one of two free throws. The Dallas Mavericks were still down two points. For a moment, it seemed as if the Memphis Grizzlies were going to defeat the Mavs. But Doncic had something up his sleeve. At the buzzer, Doncic sunk a three pointer, and the Mavs defeated the Grizzlies 114-113.
Unfortunate ending for the Grizzlies moneyline bettors. So close, yet so far. Never sleep on Doncic.
3. MLB – Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres Spread (4/16/21)
The Los Angeles Dodgers were favorites at -1.5 against the San Diego Padres on Friday. At the top of the 9thinning, Mookie Betts scored, putting the Dodger up 6-5. However, the Padres fought right back with a Manny Machado run in the bottom of the 9th. The 6-6 tie sent the game into extra innings. With the Padres at +1.5, it seemed likely that they would at least cover.
The 10th and 11th innings were scoreless. But the top of the 12th is where all of the magic happened for the Dodgers. Corey Seager homered, and Betts scored, bringing the score to 8-6. Zach McKinstry then singled and Justin Turner scored while Chris Taylor went to second and Max Muncy went to third. This brought the score to 9-6. Muncy and Taylor both went on to score, and the final score was Dodgers 11-6.
Rough night for the Padres bettors. That +1.5 spread seemed possible, but the Dodgers really came out swinging with a lot of juice in the 12th inning (pun intended).
