Bad Beats #17
Close only counts in horseshoes. If you’re betting on sports, being close is just a bad beat. Maybe you missed the over by a point. Maybe your team doesn’t cover the spread. Maybe the underdog actually won the game. Each week produces new sports betting upsets.
Here’s a look at this week’s bad beats:
1. College Basketball – Iowa Hawkeyes at Indiana Hoosiers Moneyline (2/7/21)
It’s always hard to bet against Luka Garza and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Garza is currently averaging 25.5 points per game and 8.4 rebounds. However, if you bet on Garza and the Hawkeyes on Sunday, you were left with nothing but a bad beat.
The game was tied at 65 with 27 seconds left after Iowa’s Jordan Bohannon made a three pointer. There was still time for the Hawkeyes to win, but at this point, overtime seemed more likely than not. With one second left in regulation, Indiana’s Armaan Franklin made a jumper for two points, and the Hoosiers defeated the Hawkeyes 67-65. Unfortunate result for thos who bet the Iowa moneyline at -165, but hey props to those who bet the Indiana moneyline at +145.
2. NBA – Philadelphia 76ers at Charlotte Hornets O/U and Spread (2/3/21)
This matchup between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Charlotte Hornets resulted in a bad beat on multiple levels. The over/under was set at 225.5 and the 76ers were 7-point favorite prior to tip-off. With 5.1 seconds left in the game, there was a shooting foul on Philadelphia’s Ben Simmons. Charlotte’s Devonte’ Graham was sent to the foul line and he made two of three free throws. The first free throw pushed the points total over 225.5.
With 3.9 seconds left in the game, there was a personal foul on Charlotte’s Cody Zeller, sending Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid to the line for two free throws. He made both free throws and the 76ers defeated the Hornets 118-111. Bad beat for not only the under bettors, but also those who bet the on the 76ers -7. The Sixers did win by exactly seven points though, so at least a push isn’t as bad as a loss.
3. NFL Super Bowl – Kansas City Chiefs at Tampa Bay Buccaneers Player Prop (2/7/21)
Tipico Sportsbook had a special odds boost for Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski for the Super Bowl on Sunday night. The odds boost was +6900 for Gronk to finish with exactly 69 yards with a max bet of $69. Gronk finished just short with 67 yards. Two. Yards. Just TWO YARDS destroyed the hopes and dreams of those who bet on this player prop. So close. But like I always say, close only counts in horseshoes.
