Bad Beats #19
Close only counts in horseshoes. If you’re betting on sports, being close is just a bad beat. Maybe you missed the over by a point. Maybe your team doesn’t cover the spread. Maybe the underdog actually won the game. Each week produces new sports betting upsets.
Here’s a look at this week’s bad beats:
1. NBA – Washington Wizards at Los Angeles Lakers Moneyline (2/22/21)
This Monday night matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and Washington Wizards was a thriller indeed. With 9.8 seconds left in regulation, LeBron James made a shot, tying the game at 115. With 36.1 seconds left in overtime, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope made a three pointer for the Lakers, putting them down just one. But with 11.6 seconds left in overtime, Russell Westbrook made a layup, putting the Wizards up 127-124. LeBron James and Kyle Kuzma both had opportunities to score in the final seconds, but they were unsuccessful. The Wizards won 127-124.
Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook. That’s all I have to say. Beal finished with 33 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Westbrook finished with 32 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists. Bad beat for the Lakers moneyline bettors, but fantastic game for the Washington Wizards.
2. College Basketball – West Virginia Mountaineers at Texas Longhorns Moneyline (2/20/21)
The Texas Longhorns were 8.5-point favorites heading into Saturday’s game against the West Virginia Mountaineers. With 2:27 left, the Longhorns were up 82-81. There was a foul on Texas’ Courtney Ramey, which sent West Virginia’s Taz Sherman to the foul line. Sherman made both free throws and the Mountaineers took the lead 83-82.
Not only was Texas sloppy towards the end of the game, but they also missed a lot of opportunities. With 2:09 left, Andrew Jones missed a three pointer. Then there was a foul on Texas’ Matt Coleman III. West Virginia’s Miles McBride was sent to the line and he made a free throw, putting the Mountaineers up 84-82. With 1:48 left, Texas had so much time to make a comeback. However, Greg Brown missed a three pointer, Coleman missed a free throw and Jones missed a three pointer. In the final second, Texas had yet another opportunity when Jericho Sims went for a jumper, but then he missed it. West Virginia upset Texas 84-82. Bad beat for those Texas moneyline bettors. This one was a nail-biter up until the last second, as Texas fans were hoping for another basket from the Longhorns.
3. NBA – Golden State Warriors at Charlotte Hornets Moneyline (2/20/21)
I love Draymond Green, but sometimes he just can’t keep his mouth shut, which can ultimately lose him and his team a game. That’s what happened on Saturday. The Golden State Warriors were up 100-98 with 42.8 seconds left in the game. With 9.3 seconds left, Draymond Green got two technical fouls, sending Charlotte’s Terry Rozier to the line for two free throws. Rozier made both free throws, tying the game at 100. Green was ejected after those two technical fouls. At the buzzer, Rozier made a jumper and the Charlotte Hornets won 102-100.
It’s not that Green had a great performance on Saturday prior to getting ejected, but it is a bit distracting for a teammate to be ejected at the very end of a close game. Bad beat for the Warriors moneyline bettors. But hey, if you’re a Hornets fan or you bet on the Hornets moneyline, you better thank Terry Rozier.
