Bad Beats #16
Close only counts in horseshoes. If you’re betting on sports, being close is just a bad beat. Maybe you missed the over by a point. Maybe your team doesn’t cover the spread. Maybe the underdog actually won the game. Each week produces new sports betting upsets.
Here’s a look at this week’s bad beats:
1. PGA Tour – Farmers Insurance Open Winner (1/31/21)
For those of you who don’t know, Patrick Reed won the Farmers Insurance Open on Sunday. However, many people were unhappy about this win, as they thought Reed cheated his way to victory. On the 10th hole on Saturday, Reed hit a 190-yard shot out of the bunker on a par-4. He thought his shot was embedded in the rough. Reed picked up his ball to see whether or not it was embedded, which according to the rules, he was allowed to do. But he did so prior to consulting a rules official. He was then awarded a free drop and saved par in a round of 70.
Reed’s performance on Sunday was quite impressive despite Saturday’s scandal. He sunk a 45-foot eagle putt on the 6th hole and had just one bogey on the 8th hole. He finished at 4-under on Sunday’s round and 14-under on the tournament.
Bettors and fans didn’t think Reed fairly earned this victory. So bad beat for those who bet on any other golfer besides Reed to win the tournament. However, with this weekend’s Waste Management Phoenix Open, there is lots of opportunity to come.
2. NHL – New York Islanders at Philadelphia Flyers O/U (1/31/21)
The over/under was set at 6.5 for Sunday night’s faceoff. Just 1:03 into the third period, Josh Bailey scored for the New York Islanders. The Philadelphia Flyers were still up 3-2. Just five minutes later, New York’s Matthew Barzal scored for the Flyers, tying the game 3-3. This goal also put the points total at six. Regulation ended at 3-3, forcing overtime.
Late in overtime, Kevin Hayes scored for the Flyers, putting them up by one. The Flyers won the game 4-3, and the over hit with a total of seven points. Tough game for those under bettors out there.
3. College Basketball – Texas Tech Red Raiders at LSU Tigers Spread (1/30/21)
The Texas Tech Red Raiders were 3.5-point favorites heading into Saturday’s game. With 32 seconds left in the game, the LSU tigers were up 71-70. One point. At this point, it seemed unlikely that Tech would win, let alone cover the spread. But thank goodness for Texas Tech’s Terrence Shannon Jr. With 29 seconds left, Shannon made a layup, giving the Red Raiders a one-point lead.
With 16 seconds left, there was a foul on LSU’s Trendon Watford, sending Shannon to the line for two free throws. The Red Raiders went up 74-71. Sure, that’s great and all, but they would not have covered if this were the final score. With one second left in the game, there was a foul on Josh LeBlanc Sr., which sent Shannon to the line for two free throws again. Shannon made both free throws, and Texas Tech won 76-71, covering the 3.5-point spread. Bad beat for those LSU spread bettors out there. If Shannon hadn’t made those free throws, LSU would have covered.
