Bad Beats #7
Close only counts in horseshoes. If you’re betting on sports, being close is just a bad beat. Maybe you missed the over by a point. Maybe your team doesn’t cover the spread. Maybe the underdog actually won the game. Each week produces new sports betting upsets.
Here’s a look at this week’s bad beats:
1. NFL – Seattle Seahawks at Philadelphia Eagles Spread (11/30/20)
The Seattle Seahawks were up 20-9 for the majority of the fourth quarter. Then the Seahawks scored a field goal and went up 23-9. It seemed as if the Seahawks would win and cover the 6.5-point spread effortlessly.
However, we all know that it’s not really over until it’s over. The Philadelphia Eagles had no chance winning with 12 seconds left in the game. But they did have a chance to score a touchdown. Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz threw a 33-yard Hail Mary that was caught by Richard Rogers for a touchdown. At that point, the Seahawks were still up 23-15 before the extra point. With an extra point, Seattle would still cover.
But would the Seahawks cover if the Eagles went for a 2-point conversion? No, they would not. And that’s exactly what the Eagles did! Miles Sanders scored, and the Seahawks won by six points with a final score of 23-17.
So, for those who bet on the Seahawks to cover the 6.5-point spread, that’s really tough. Sorry for your loss.
2. NFL – Los Angeles Chargers at Buffalo Bills Spread (11/29/20)
The Buffalo Bills were 4.5-point favorites against the Los Angeles Chargers. At the end of the fourth quarter, the Bills led 27-17. With 40 seconds left in the game, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert threw a Hail Mary to Tyron Johnson, putting them on the 1-yard line. The Chargers had a real chance of scoring here, in which case they could have covered the 4.5-point spread.
However, Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn really mismanaged the clock at the end, and the Chargers ran out of time. The Bills defeated the Chargers 27-17, and Chargers spread bettors were let down by Lynn.
3. NFL – Kansas City Chiefs at Tampa Bay Buccaneers Spread (11/29/20)
Patrick Mahomes against Tom Brady. Two incredibly talented quarterbacks. In a sense both of these teams won in different ways. Sure, the Kansas City Chiefs got the game win, but the Buccaneers got the betting win. The Buccaneers were 3.5-point underdogs headed into this matchup.
The Chiefs were up 17 points going into the fourth quarter, leading 27-10. At that rate, it seemed very likely that the Chiefs would cover unequivocally. But leave it to Tom Brady and the Buccaneers to make some magic in the fourth quarter. The Buccaneers can especially thank Mike Evans. Evans caught two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, 31-yards and 7-yards, respectively. The Buccaneers scored 14 points in the fourth quarter. Although the Chiefs won 27-24, the Buccaneers were able to cover the 3.5-point spread.
All those Chiefs spread bettors got the short end of the stick, but way to go TB12 and Buccaneers spread bettors.
4. NCAA Basketball – McNeese State Cowboys at Nebraska Cornhuskers O/U (11/25/20)
With a 102-55 Nebraska win, this game was obviously a total beatdown. But hey serious sports bettors, listen to this. The over/under for this game was set at 154.5. At the very end of the game, the score was 102-52, which comes out to a total of 154. However, a half court buzzer beater by McNeese’s A.J. Lawson pushed the game over the total with 157 points.
Under bettors, I am sorry for your loss. But shoutout to those over bettors! You guys really got lucky thanks to McNeese Men’s Basketball.
