Bad Beats #22
Close only counts in horseshoes. If you’re betting on sports, being close is just a bad beat. Maybe you missed the over by a point. Maybe your team doesn’t cover the spread. Maybe the underdog actually won the game. Each week produces new sports betting upsets.
Here’s a look at this week’s bad beats:
1. College Basketball – LSU Tigers at Alabama Crimson Tide Moneyline (3/14/21)
The SEC Tournament Final took place on Sunday afternoon, and let me tell you, it was too close for comfort. If you had this game in a 5-leg parlay (like I did), then you were chewing off your nails up until the clock hit zero. Now, I had Alabama on the moneyline in my parlay, so I ended up JUST being safe. However, if you bet on the LSU moneyline at +220, you got the short end of the stick.
As happy as I am with the outcome of this game, LSU had multiple opportunities in the end to take the lead and ultimately win. With four seconds left, LSU had possession and Trendon Watford attempted a three pointer, but missed. Failed opportunity. With one second left, LSU had another shot with a layup from Aundre Hyatt, but he missed. Failed opportunity. And that was the end of the game. Alabama defeated LSU 80-79 and everyone who bet the Alabama ML was safe, but the LSU moneyline bettors were just left with a bad beat.
2. NBA – Utah Jazz at Golden State Warriors Odds Boost (3/14/21)
Tipico Sportsbook had an odds boost on Sunday for Utah’s Donovan Mitchell and Golden State’s Steph Curry to each make 5+ three pointers. The odds were boosted to +550. Curry had no issue reaching the 5+ 3PTM mark, finishing with six. Mitchell, on the other hand, was at four made threes with just a little bit of time left.
With 13.2 seconds left on the clock, Mitchell went for a three, but missed. An unfortunate bad beat for those who bet on this odds boost. Just one three pointer short and a missed opportunity to get the last necessary three at the end.
3. NBA – Atlanta Hawks at Toronto Raptors Moneyline (3/11/21)
It did look like the Toronto Raptors were going to win on Thursday against the Atlanta Hawks. However, everything was not quite what it seemed. The Raptors were up 120-118 with 11.3 seconds left after DeAndre’ Bembry missed a two-point shot for Toronto. Atlanta’s Clint Capela got the defensive rebound and the Hawks took a timeout with 7.1 seconds left in the game.
With the clock counting down and the Hawks with possession, Trae Young passed it to Tony Snell, who made a three pointer at the buzzer. The Hawks won 121-120, and those who bet on the Raptors moneyline were left with nothing but disappointment and resentment for Tony Snell.
