Bad Beats #8
Close only counts in horseshoes. If you’re betting on sports, being close is just a bad beat. Maybe you missed the over by a point. Maybe your team doesn’t cover the spread. Maybe the underdog actually won the game. Each week produces new sports betting upsets.
Here’s a look at this week’s bad beats:
1. NFL – Jacksonville Jaguars at Minnesota Vikings O/U (12/6/20)
Overtime games are always fun, but if you bet the over, this one was not. The over/under was set at 51.5 prior to kickoff. With just over a minute left in the fourth quarter, Jacksonville’s James Robinson ran it in for a 1-yard touchdown to make it 24-22. Then Jaguars quarterback Mike Glennon passed it to Collin Johnson for a two-point conversion, tying the game at 24. At this point, the points total was at 48.
In overtime, it was 3rd and Goal at the Jacksonsville 1-yard line. The Vikings were about to score, but Dakota Dozier’s false start cost the Vikings 4 yards. Instead of going for the touchdown, the Vikings decided to play it safe and kick a field goal. The Vikings defeated the Jaguars 27-24, but the under hit with a total of 51 points. Sorry over bettors, I am sure you were really praying for a Vikings TD in OT.
2. NFL – Las Vegas Raiders at New York Jets Moneyline (12/6/20)
J-E-T-S. Jets fans really had nothing to lose on Sunday night. I mean if the Jets won, it would have been their first win of the season, which would have been cool, I guess. However, if they lost, (which they did) they still have their sights set on Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence for next season.
In all seriousness though, this game was shockingly a thriller. After those two fourth quarter touchdowns by quarterback Sam Darnold and running back Ty Johnson, respectively, the Jets were up 28-24 with 5:34 left in the game. It’s really not over until the last second, or in this case, the last five seconds. With FIVE seconds left in the game, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr passed it to Henry Ruggs III for a 46-yard touchdown. The Raiders won 31-28, and the Jets lost their 12th game of the season, making their overall record an impressive 0-12.
So, for those who took the Jets on the moneyline at +275, I am really sorry for your loss. But then again, for Jets fans and bettors, losing is expected at this point.
3. NCAA Football – BYU Cougars at Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Moneyline (12/5/20)
The BYU Cougars and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers were both undefeated at 9-0 going into this matchup. With 6:32 left in the third quarter, Coastal Carolina kicked a field goal that put them down one (17-16). In the fourth quarter, CJ Marable scored a 2-yard rushing touchdown, and Coastal Carolina went up 22-17.
Now, here is where the bad beat comes in. BYU could have scored at the end of the game. With seven seconds left in the fourth quarter, BYU quarterback Zach Wilson completed a 17-yard pass to Dax Milne, which brought BYU to Coastal’s 1-yard line. Unfortunately, they were stopped at the 1-yard line as time expired, and Coastal Carolina upset BYU 22-17. Bad beat for those BYU -360 moneyline bettors.
4. NCAA Football – Arkansas Razorbacks at Missouri Tigers Spread (12/5/20)
The spread was set at Missouri -2.5 prior to Saturday’s kickoff. With 43 seconds left in the game, Arkansas quarterback Mike Woods passed it to KJ Jefferson for a 14-yard touchdown. Instead of going for the extra point, the Razorbacks decided to go for a two-point conversion, and they were successful. After the two-point conversion, the Razorbacks went up 48-47.
The Missouri Tigers scored a field goal in the final seconds of the game, but only won by two. If the Razorbacks had just kicked the extra point instead of going for the two-point conversion, Mizzou would have covered the 2.5-point spread.
