Bad Beats #18
Close only counts in horseshoes. If you’re betting on sports, being close is just a bad beat. Maybe you missed the over by a point. Maybe your team doesn’t cover the spread. Maybe the underdog actually won the game. Each week produces new sports betting upsets.
Here’s a look at this week’s bad beats:
1. College Basketball – Loyola Chicago Ramblers at Drake Bulldogs Moneyline (2/14/21)
The Loyola Chicago Ramblers played the Drake Bulldogs on Saturday, February 13th as well as Sunday, February 14th. After the Ramblers dominated the Drake Bulldogs 81-54 on Saturday, it seemed more likely than not that Loyola Chicago would win Sunday’s matchup as well.
After Loyola Chicago’s 27-point win on Saturday, the Bulldogs were very hungry for a Sunday victory. Going into Sunday’s matchup, the Ramblers were -250 on the moneyline. With 1:26 left in the second half, Drake’s Roman Penn made a layup, tying the game at 45, sending it into overtime. With 2:04 left in overtime, Drake led 51-48 after Darnell Brodie made a layup.
The Ramblers had possession with four seconds left in overtime. Loyola Chicago’s Marquise Kennedy went for a layup, but missed it, and Drake won 51-50. That’s one bad beat for those who bet the Loyola Chicago moneyline.
2. NBA – Portland Trail Blazers at Dallas Mavericks Moneyline (2/14/21)
The Dallas Mavericks were 5.5-point favorites heading into Sunday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers. The Mavs were -220 on the moneyline while the Blazers were +190. With 6.9 seconds left in the game, Portland’s Derrick Jones Jr. made a layup, putting the Blazers up 121-118.
The Mavericks had a chance to tie the game with five seconds left when Luka Doncic went for a three-pointer. However, he missed the shot, and the Blazers defeated the Mavs 121-118. If he had made that shot, he would have tied the game and it most likely would have gone into overtime. Silly Luka.
3. College Basketball – Oklahoma Sooners at West Virginia Mountaineers Moneyline (2/13/21)
The West Virginia Mountaineers were the favorite going into this one. They were around -170 on the moneyline. The Oklahoma Sooners were around +145 on the moneyline. This one was certainly a thriller. With 23 seconds left, Oklahoma’s Umoja Gibson tied the game at 72, sending the game into overtime.
But wait, there’s more overtime in store! With 24 seconds left in overtime, West Virginia’s Jalen Bridges tied the game at 79, sending it into double overtime. With 28 seconds left, Oklahoma’s Austin Reaves made a jumper, putting them up 91-90. West Virginia had multiple opportunities with a couple Derek Culver shots and a Jalen Bridges tip shot with two seconds left. However, all the attempts were unsuccessful, and Oklahoma came out with a 91-90 win. Unfortunate loss for the West Virginia moneyline bettors.
