In Between the Lines: Chapter 22

1. College Basketball – Selection Sunday (3/14/21 at 6pm)

In case you missed it, Selection Sunday is just two days away. Within the last couple of days, some teams have had unfortunate luck with positive COVID-19 cases. On Thursday, there was a positive test within their men’s basketball program. Not only did this take the Blue Devils out of their ACC Tournament game against the Florida State Seminoles and the rest of the ACC Tournament, but it ended their season entirely. On Friday, there was another positive coronavirus case on University of Virginia’s team, taking them out of the ACC Tournament game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Virginia is out of the ACC Tournament, but still have a chance to make the NCAA Tournament.

According to FTN’s Brad Evans’ Big Board, the No. 1 seeds he likes for the NCAA Tournament will be Gonzaga for the West, Baylor for the South, Michigan for the Midwest, and Illinois for the East. As far as No. 2 seeds, Brad likes Alabama, Iowa, Ohio State, and Houston. Going back to Virginia, they are currently a No. 4 seed on Brad’s Big Board if everything is resolved by the time of the NCAA Tournament.

There is a lot of good college basketball to watch this weekend leading up to Selection Sunday. The conference tournament finals will take place on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will be the Pac-12 Tournament, ACC Tournament and Big 12 Tournament. Sunday will be the Big Ten Tournament and SEC Tournament. Jumping ahead a bit, I just want to throw in what I have said before and still stand by, and that is that I like the Gonzaga Bulldogs to win the NCAA Tournament.

2. NHL – New York Rangers at Boston Bruins (3/13/21 at 1pm)

Friday will be the second straight meeting between the New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins. On Thursday, the Bruins defeated and shut out the Rangers 4-0. The Bruins are 1.5-point favorites and -190 on the moneyline. Based on Thursday’s meeting, I like the Bruins at -1.5.

The over/under is set at 5.5. In the past six Bruins games, the total has gone under 5.5 goals five times. So, I definitely like the under in this one based on the trends. And if you want to get really specific, I like David Pastrnak to score a goal. He has scored in the last two games, so why not?

3. NHL – Washington Capitals at Philadelphia Flyers (3/13/21 at 7pm)

The Washington Capitals have played well against the Philadelphia Flyers this season. This will be the fourth time they play each other this season. The Capitals have won two out of three meetings. The most recent meeting was on Thursday, and the Capitals defeated the Flyers 5-3. I like the Capitals to win tomorrow’s faceoff on the moneyline. I also like Alex Ovechkin to score a goal tomorrow night.
