Here’s what you absolutely can’t miss this upcoming week in sports:
1. College Football – Jackson State Tigers at Grambling State Tigers (3/6/21 at 1pm)
Yeah, that’s right. You heard correctly. College football. It seems as if most people have forgotten that the FCS Football season is underway. Either that or people just haven’t really been talking about it much since there is so much happening in sports. Anyways, this is fantastic for sports bettors. Why? Because more football to bet on! Who doesn’t love that? It’s spring and we have football, ladies and gentlemen.
This will be Grambling State’s season opener, and it will take place at home at Eddie Robinson Stadium. Why is this important? Well, Grambling State has won 16 straight home games since 2015. This is the FCS’ second-longest active home winning streak. The longest FCS home active winning streak was North Dakota State with 30. Grambling State is a 10.5-point favorite to win against the Jackson State Tigers. However, I like Grambling State on the moneyline at -450.
But hey, kind of cool that Jackson State has Deion Sanders as a head coach. Jackson State also demolished Edward Waters in a shutout of 53-0 in their first game of the season. Although Jackson State’s win over Edward Waters was expected, quarterback Jalon Jones finished with a 196.2 passer rating (17 of 19, 163 yards and 2 TDs). This was the best finish by a Jackson State quarterback since LaMontiez Ivy in 2015.
2. College Basketball – No. 4 Illinois Fighting Illini at No. 7 Ohio State Buckeyes (3/6/21 at 4pm)
The Illinois Fighting Illini are hungry. They are going for their fifth straight win against ranked opponents, and their last loss against a ranked opponent was back in January against the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes have been having a bit of a tough time, losing their last three games to Michigan, Michigan State and Iowa, respectively.
I like Illinois on the moneyline in this one. llinois' most recent 76-53 win over Michigan was a big one that snapped their seven-game winning streak. Illinois also did this without their leading scorer, Ayo Dosunmu, who was injured in their game against Michigan State on February 23rd. Illinois’ Trent Frazier stepped up big time for the Fighting Illini, finishing with 22 points against Michigan. So, even if Dosunmu is unable to play on Saturday, I don’t think this Illinois team will have any problem defeating the Buckeyes.
3. NBA – NBA All-Star Game (3/7/21 at 8pm)
LeBron James is 3-0 as an All-Star captain. In the last two All-Star games, Giannis Antetokounmpo and LeBron were two opposing captains. However, this year Giannis and LeBron will get to play on Team LeBron together.
LeBron chose Giannis as the No. 1 overall pick in the All-Star Draft. LeBron also added Steph Curry, Luka Doncic and Nikola Jokic. The player who got the most votes this year in the Eastern Conference was not Giannis, but instead Kevin Durant. Durant will not play due to a hamstring injury. He chose Kyrie Irving, Joel Embiid, Kawhi Leonard, Bradley Beal and Jayson Tatum to represent Team Durant. The All-Star odds are not out just yet, but I like Team LeBron to defeat Team Durant. I mean, come on, that is “one good starting five” as Giannis said.
