This week, the PGA Tour is heading back to California to play the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am at the world-famous Pebble Beach Golf Links. The key this week will be approach play, with off-the-tee advantage being fairly negligible compared to a normal week. Many holes at Pebble Beach take the driver out of a golfer’s hand and a majority of the field is playing from relatively similar position with their approach. In the past, there have been as many as eight holes where golfers will use less than driver off the tee! The rough is not overly penal so errant tee shots will not be a huge factor unless they find their way off the bluff.

This event is also typically played across three different courses Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with a 54-hole cut following. Due to the pandemic, the pro-am portion of this tournament was canceled (despite the name continuing), and the tournament will be played across two different courses Thursday and Friday, Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill. Weather can also play a factor with Pebble Beach being right on the coast, and if the wind starts blowing, things can get difficult quickly. However, Spyglass Hill isn’t always affected by the weather, and this could play a small factor if the wind only blows on one of the first two days of the tournament.

Who should you watch out for?

We have managed to find the winner two straight weeks and now the pressure is on to go for the hat trick. Let’s dive into the Tipico Sportsbook odds board and see if we can find this week’s winner.

With Dustin Johnson withdrawing, the odds near the top of the board shifted quite a bit from openers. That said, Tipico is still offering a great number on Paul Casey, so he will be my first tip at 18/1. Consistently one of the best iron players in the world, Casey has found success in this event in the past and his current form is some of the best he’s flashed in recent years. His safe off the tee game should set him up hole after hole to have good looks into the greens. Although historically putting is his weakness, he’s good enough to push for a victory. Once not known for winning ways, he has claimed his most recent trophy a mere three weeks ago and now has four worldwide victories since 2018.

We will travel a bit further down the board for our second selection this week and that will be Harold Varner III (60/1). Varner may lack consistency, but when he has played the weekend of late, he has managed to surge toward the top of the leaderboard. His game is suitable off the tee and his best skill is his iron play. With no pressure to be brilliant with the driver, Varner should hopefully be able to navigate Pebble Beach through his approach game. If he can get a few extra putts to fall, we will hopefully see him making a push Sunday.
