This week the PGA Tour is heading to San Diego for the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. The South Course, future site of the 2021 US Open, will play host to three of the four rounds this weekend, with the golfers playing one of their two opening rounds on the North Course as well.
Although we have seen Brandt Snedeker play well and win this event twice, he is not the typical profile that sets up best for this extreme test. As a 7,802-yard, par 72, the South Course is beyond demanding, and downright grueling if the weather does not cooperate. The golfers who have succeeded the most at Torrey Pines have done so with primarily through gains off the tee by distance more than accuracy. The penalty for missing fairways on the South Course is the same as the tour average so golfers should let it fly on every par four and five.
Who should you watch out for?
Per Tipico Sportsbook odds, the first golfer who sticks out is Scottie Scheffler (30/1). Scheffler is an exceptional talent with his best golf in front of him, and there’s a good chance it can come this week. His distance off the tee will be a leg up, and he’s one of the more aggressive golfers on par 5s. With such difficult scoring, golfers have to make birdies on par 5s, as the opportunities will be limited on the remaining 14 holes.
You can also find a great number on Patrick Reed (25/1) on Tipico Sportsbook. Reed’s Swiss Army knife style of golf sets him up to play well at any course. He gains over 0.25 strokes in all four strokes gained categories allowing himself to grind out solid rounds even if part of his game isn’t top-notch that day. He has played well at Torrey Pines in the past, even when his off the tee game was struggling and he’s currently playing some of his best golf with his driver. His irons have been failing him, but that’s not typical and his strong short game can lift him up. I expect a solid rebound after missing the cut last week.
