WEEK IN REVIEW
Last week’s game against the Chiefs went about according to plan with a 35-9 defeat. Patrick Mahomes shredded the Jets defense for five passing touchdowns. This team was simply on another level than the Jets on Sunday, and the final score made that very clear. Sam Darnold looked completely overwhelmed throughout the game. Chiefs star pass-rusher Chris Jones was in his face all day and definitely in his head by the end of the day as well. The only positive to take from this game for the Jets was the play of Quinnen Williams. He continues to show up on the field, as he did on the screen pass from Mahomes that resulted in a big loss. The Jets got this pick right.
NEWS OF THE WEEK
Adam Gase is still the head coach. As mentioned in previous weeks, this will be the main story until it is no longer the case. A new excuse for Gase to keep his job may be forming as rumors start to circulate about the Jets moving on from quarterback Sam Darnold. Darnold may end up serving as Gase’s most recent “fall guy” as the Jets set their eyes on the first overall draft pick and an opportunity to make Trevor Lawrence the new face of New York. With very few winnable games remaining on the schedule and a date with the New England Patriots looming, sights will begin to set on next season and Gase will do his best to weasel his way to another year of NFL employment.
THE WEEK AHEAD
The Jets will host the Patriots on Monday night in a matchup that could serve as a get-right game for either the team. The winless Jets are obviously underperforming compared to where they had hoped to be, but New England isn’t doing much better. The Patriots only have two wins seven games into the season. This week, head coach Bill Belichick gave the public a glimpse behind the curtains when he noted that the Patriots “sold out and won three Super Bowls” in his comments about the team’s struggles. This was one of the most vulnerable public appearances in Belichick’s career and it may be marking that he is near the end of running the “Evil Empire” of the AFC. New England currently stands as 7.5-point road favorites as of the writing of this piece with a 41.5 over/under. Our experts are expecting both teams to struggle a bit, with a low implied point total. Don’t expect fireworks in this game unless Cam Newton breaks out of his recent funk.
