Week in Review
The Giants suffered a tough loss to the Los Angeles Rams last week. The defense played relatively well, diagnosing a number of Sean McVay’s spacing concepts and shutting down some of the Rams’ signature plays. A deep shot to Cooper Kupp really opened up the game for Los Angeles, while Daniel Jones and company were unable to get any momentum going. Daniel Jones’ redzone interception was the nail in the coffin for the Giants’ comeback attempt. the throw was rushed and behind the receiver, which resulted in the turnover. Jones had three solid options on this play: throw the ball to the pylon in front of the receiver, wait another half second (he was not under pressure) and float the ball to the corner of the endzone, or take off and run for at least ten yards given the open space in front of him. With how dependent the Giants are on Jones to make plays, he has very little room for error, and isn’t getting much help from the team around him or the coaching staff.
News of the Week
Jason Garrett is preparing to take on his former team in a showdown with coaching prodigy Kellen Moore. Moore’s offense is one of the league leaders in points and yards. Their success, along with the innovation McVay showed last week, holds a stark difference from Garrett’s offensive scheme. The Clapper is showing why Jerry Jones took his play-calling responsibilities away in 2013. Garrett was handed an extremely talented roster that was able to execute his vanilla playbook well because the players’ talent exceeded the quality of the scheme. Now, he’s trying to run that same, basic offense with a roster that is mossing their best player, Saquon Barkley, and a limited offensive line. Garrett is putting far too much responsibility on Daniel Jones’ and this scheme needs more innovation, otherwise it will continue to struggle.
The Week Ahead
The Giants and Cowboys face off this week in Arlington in a game that could quickly become a race to 40 points with a 54.5 over/under. Dallas features one of the most potent offenses in the league, scoring 109 points in their last three games, as well as one of the most vulnerable defenses, allowing 129 points over those same three games. The G-Men will have to rely on some big plays from Darius Slayton, who already has four multi-touchdown games in his young career. The 2019 5th round pick has adjusted extremely well to the NFL, relying on his athleticism while developing his technique as a receiver. Slayton scoring is going to be a popular prop bet this weekend against this porous Dallas defense that has featured some of the worst safety play in the league. Big play opportunities will be available, the question is whether or not Daniel Jones and Jason Garrett can take advantage of them.
